Bright sits on the Ovens Valley floor, ringed by steep forested alpine country. Fire has reached this area again and again — 2003, 2013 and the 2019–20 Black Summer — and the January 2026 fires put Alpine Shire on the State's bushfire-recovery list. Even when no fire reaches the town, smoke alone can empty the streets the town lives on. On a bad day the plan that saves lives is to leave early, while the Great Alpine Road is still open.
