Churchill sits where the Churchill River meets Hudson Bay, and the tide runs the estuary — close to five metres between low and high on the big tides. It shapes when the belugas crowd onto the water, when boats can launch, and how far the flats and rock outcrops open up at Cape Merry. Here are today's high and low tides and the week ahead.
A falling tide opens up bear country
In summer and fall the shoreline, flats and rock outcrops that a low tide uncovers are polar-bear ground. Don't walk the shore or Cape Merry alone in bear season, keep well back from the water's edge, and read 'Polar Bears: Staying Safe in Bear Season'. Report any bear to the Polar Bear Alert line, 204-675-2327.
Belugas and the tide
Thousands of belugas move into the warmer, shallow estuary through the summer, and boat and Zodiac tours plan around the tide and the river. Let the whales come to you and follow your operator's lead.

Heights are above chart datum — roughly the lowest tide on the nautical charts — not above the wharf deck or the street. Times are local (CDT). The gauge is at the Port of Churchill, at the mouth of the river.
Predictions, not measurements
These are astronomical tide predictions. Wind, air pressure and storm surge can push the real water level well above or below them — in bad weather, check the Environment Canada forecast and warnings at weather.gc.ca before trusting a number here. In an emergency on or near the water, call 911, or hail the Canadian Coast Guard on marine VHF channel 16. Hudson Bay stays frigid year-round and the currents at the river mouth are strong.
