Ella's hills are made for the first light. After the train, a dawn climb up Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock is the reason many people come — but timing it is the hard part: the sun is up before you know it, and the way down is no place to be in the dark. This page works out today's first light, sunrise, sunset and dusk over Ella, and what time to set off for each lookout to catch the light.

Easy
The easiest of the climbs and the most popular for dawn — roughly 45 minutes up from the road through the tea fields, on a clear, well-trodden path. You won't be alone at sunrise.
For sunrise (around 5:53), leave by 4:53.
For sunset (around 18:24), head up by 17:24.
Start back down by 18:07 to be off the hill before dark.
A longer, steeper climb of around two hours that starts along the railway from Ella station. The path is famously easy to lose — many walkers take a wrong turn off the line — so go with a group or a local guide, and never plan to come down in the dark.
For sunrise (around 5:53), leave by 3:33.

Not a climb — about a 30–40 minute walk down from town. Come at first light for soft light and far fewer people; the access trail down to the bridge is steep and slippery after rain.
For sunrise (around 5:53), leave by 5:08.

On the path
The Ella Rock route is the one people get lost on: it leaves the railway at an unmarked turn. Walk it with someone or take a guide, and turn back rather than descend once the light is going.
Trains still run on the line you walk to reach Ella Rock and Nine Arches. Step well clear and listen for them — services have changed since the 2025 cyclone and can pass at unexpected times.
After rain the paths are muddy and slippery and leeches come out; wear long socks and take care on the steep sections.
Carry water and a torch. There are no shops on the climbs, and any start before first light needs a light to walk by.
These are the sun’s times at the open horizon. Behind the ridges the sun appears a little later, and up here a clear dawn is often hidden by morning mist — it is never guaranteed.
The climb times are rough and a margin is already added, but go by your own pace and set off earlier if you are unsure.
Carry a torch (your phone will do) for any start before first light, and never take a steep descent in the dark — turn back if the light is going.
