Getting to Hallstatt
Pick how you're travelling — train and ferry, car, coach, or bus — and get the plan for arriving without parking illegally or missing the boat.
Hallstatt has one road in, a railway station on the far shore of the lake, and about a million day-visitors a year for 760 residents. Where you arrive — and where you park — decides whether the day goes smoothly. Pick how you're travelling and here's the plan.
The old centre is closed to visitor cars
Every way to arrive
How are you travelling?
By train + ferry
The station is across the lake — the ‘Stefanie’ ferry meets each train.
How it works
- Take the ÖBB Salzkammergutbahn regional train (the Attnang-Puchheim ↔ Stainach-Irdning line) to Hallstatt Bahnhof, on the far shore of the lake.
- Walk about two minutes down to the ferry pier just below the station.
- The ‘Stefanie’ ferry meets each arriving train and crosses to the village in around 10–15 minutes. Bring cash — the fare is €4 one way and cards aren't accepted.
- For the trip back, the ferry leaves the village a few minutes before each train departs from the far side — line it up with the train you want.

By car
Park at the edge in P1–P4 and walk in — the centre is closed to cars.
How it works
- Follow the B166 lakeside road to Hallstatt and park in one of the day-visitor lots P1, P2, P3 or P4. The historic centre is blocked to cars by two barriers.
- From P1 (by the petrol station) it's about a 20-minute walk into the centre; P2 (at the Salzberg cable-car) is about 15 minutes.
- Pay at the machine before you leave — the first 15 minutes are free.
- Spaces can't be reserved and the lots fill by late morning in summer. Come early, or take the train and skip the parking altogether.
- Day ticket (13–24h)
- €20
- Shorter stays
- €5 for 1h, €9 for 2h, €10 up to 4h, €15 up to 12h

By coach
Coaches must book an entry slot in advance — the daily number is capped.
How it works
- Every coach bringing passengers to Hallstatt must book an entry-and-exit slot online in advance at hallstatt-parking.com. Arriving without one isn't allowed.
- Slots are limited (around 54 coaches a day is the figure reported by the village), with priority for groups staying overnight — book early in high season.
- You get 20 minutes at the terminal to drop off or pick up, and the exit slot must be at least 2 hours 20 minutes after entry, so the day is built around a real visit rather than a quick photo stop.
- Pay by card when you book; you'll get a QR-code ticket for the entry and exit barriers. School groups register by email and don't pay the fee.
- Day coach (from 1 May 2026)
- €126
