Two highways connect Leh to the rest of India, and two high passes connect it to its own valleys — and for roughly half the year, most of them are shut. District Administration, Leh
How to reach Leh (district administration)
West to Kargil, Srinagar and the railhead · ~434 km from town
The Zojila Tunnel will eventually take the winter closure out of this road: excavation was completed on 9 June 2026, with opening expected around 2028.
South over Baralacha La and Tanglang La to Keylong and Manali · ~473 km from town
The Border Roads Organisation (Project Himank in Ladakh) builds, clears and maintains the highways and passes; opening and closing decisions are announced through the district administration. There is no official live status feed — travel-blog trackers fill the gap informally, but the administration's word is the one that counts.
In a normal winter, once Zoji La and the Manali road both shut (roughly November to May), Leh is reachable only by air — in deep winter sometimes a single daily Delhi service. Winter travel plans should never assume a road.
Two recent firsts: the Srinagar–Leh highway stayed open through the whole 2025–26 winter for the first time on record, and the Zojila Tunnel's excavation was completed in June 2026 (opening expected around 2028). The November–May isolation that has defined Leh's year may loosen over the coming few years — but until the tunnel opens, plan on the traditional windows.
