Worth knowing
Ffos-y-fran and dust
When the Ffos-y-fran opencast was working, dust was a long-running complaint in Dowlais and on the eastern edge of town. Coal-cutting stopped in 2023, but people still watch the air on dry, windy days over the old workings — which is why this tool shows coarse dust separately from fine particles.
A model, not a monitor
This reading comes from a Europe-wide computer model on a roughly 10 km grid, not a sensor in your street. It’s the general picture for the valley — check the official Welsh air-quality forecast for detail or if you have a health condition.
Updated . These are modelled estimates for the area around Merthyr Tydfil, not readings from a street monitor — air right beside a busy road can be worse than the area-wide picture. Official forecast: airquality.gov.wales. Air quality data by Open-Meteo (CC BY 4.0), based on Copernicus CAMS.
