On Tuesday, July 14, the 8:00 a.m. sailing from Port Townsend and the 8:45 a.m. sailing from Coupeville are cancelled due to tidal conditions. Boats on the run today

Crossing: About 35 minutes across Admiralty Inlet.
The boats: Two 64-car Kwa-di Tabil-class ferries — usually the Salish and the Kennewick.
Reservations: Free, and strongly recommended. About 80% of the car spaces are held for reservations, 20% for drive-up — so a reservation is the difference between making a sailing and waiting on a summer afternoon. Book each direction separately.
At the dock: Arrive 30–45 minutes early, and check in at the tollbooth at least 30 minutes before your reserved sailing or you lose the spot and travel stand-by.

Tidal cancellations are normal on this route

Keystone Harbor on the Coupeville side is shallow, so WSDOT cancels specific sailings on extreme high and low tides — most months have some. When a bulletin above names cancelled departures, or a boat in the table shows Cancelled, that's why. Always check before you drive.

The next reservation release

Vehicle reservations for Sept. 20, 2026 through Jan. 2, 2027 open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Reservations open in blocks like this a couple of times a year.

The bridge: SR 104 across Hood Canal — the longest floating bridge over saltwater in the world, and the only bridge route off the peninsula to the Kitsap side.
It opens for boats: The draw span opens for Navy submarines and large marine traffic, which have the right of way. An opening usually holds traffic 10–45 minutes.
It closes in high wind: WSDOT closes the bridge to all traffic when winds hold at about 40 mph for 15 minutes — the deck can't take the strain. This is the closure that most often strands the peninsula.

Worth knowing

Why both, on one page

Port Townsend sits at the tip of the Quimper Peninsula, and the Hood Canal Bridge and the Coupeville ferry are its two ways across the water to the rest of Puget Sound. When the bridge closes — for wind, a submarine opening, or repair work — the ferry is the fallback; when the ferry is cancelled or full, the bridge is. Knowing both at a glance is the point of this page.

A closure isn't a detour — it's the day

If the bridge is shut and there's no ferry space, the only way around is the long drive south around Hood Canal through Shelton and back up the Kitsap side — a couple of hours added each way. That's why residents check before they leave, not when they arrive at a closed span.
