Getting Here & Getting Back
The bus routes in and out, which ones you must book ahead, and the last bus back — so a day trip doesn’t end with you stranded.
Shirakawa-gō has no train — every way in and out is by road, and most visitors come by bus from Takayama, Kanazawa or Nagoya. The buses are the easy part. The hard part is getting back: the last departures leave in the late afternoon, and several routes are reserved-seat only. This page lays out the routes, which ones you must book ahead, and the last-bus reality — so a day trip doesn’t end with you stranded. For exact times, always check the operator.
Plan your way back before you set off
There is no train. The buses out leave in the late afternoon, and missing the last one means staying the night. Note your last bus before you arrive:
- Last bus back toward Takayama: around 17:30
- Last bus back toward Kanazawa: around 17:55
- Toward Nagoya: check the operator’s last departure.
- Toward Toyama: check the operator’s last departure.
- Toward Takaoka: check the operator’s last departure.
Shirakawa-gō asks day visitors to tour the village only between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. — after 5:00 p.m. the village is for overnight guests. The last buses out leave around this time, so a day trip has to end earlier than people expect.
