Water is the thing St. George worries about most — the Virgin River is about tapped out and the city keeps growing. The biggest single thing a household can do is replace thirsty lawn, and the water district pays you to do it. Type in how much grass you have to see what the rebate would be and how much water it saves, and check how often you should be watering this month.

These are the water district's recommended maximum lawn-watering days for the month — Nov–Feb about once a week (often none in midwinter), Mar–Apr and Sep–Oct up to three times, and May–Aug up to four. The bill saving is a rough estimate. Outdoor watering is what pushes a summer bill into St. George's higher water tiers (about $7–$8 per 1,000 gallons, and a county surcharge above a monthly threshold), so saved irrigation is valued there — but your real saving depends on your usage, meter and the season. Check your own water bill. Homes on separate secondary (irrigation) water save at a different rate.

Get the free inspection before you dig
The water district estimates conventional lawn here drinks about 56 gallons per square foot a year, while water-wise landscaping uses about 11 — so each square foot of grass you remove saves roughly 45 gallons a year. A 500 sq ft park strip is about 22,500 gallons a year.
On new homes, St. George now limits lawn to about 8% of the landscaped area, bans grass within 10 feet of a road or parking lot, and bans it in strips narrower than about 8 feet (park strips). If you're building or fully relandscaping, plan for water-wise planting from the start — and the rebate can help cover the change.
In most of St. George, lawns are watered with the same culinary (drinking) water that comes out of the tap, so cutting outdoor use directly lowers a billed water bill. Separate non-potable secondary water exists only in certain neighborhoods.
