Italy's Civil Protection department publishes a criticality bulletin every afternoon, rating each warning zone for river flooding, thunderstorms and landslide risk — for today and tomorrow. This page reads the official assessment for Vernazza's zone. The alert colours — gialla, arancione, rossa — are the ones on the news and on the Comune's ordinances every autumn.

The wind at Vernazza harbour
A moderate breeze (about 23 km/h, gusts to 70), out of the northeast.
Strongest gusts forecast over the next 24 hours: about 70 km/h. Wind words follow the Beaufort scale. This is a weather model’s forecast for the hour, not a measurement — exposed ground above town will see more.

Liguria's own alert service, allertaLIGURIA, is what the Comune acts on: when an allerta is declared it drives school closures and access restrictions. IT-alert pushes a message to every phone in the area for the most serious events. In an emergency call 112.

Worth knowing
25 October 2011
In about six hours, roughly 542 mm of rain fell on the hills above town — most of an average year. The Vernazzola came down as a debris flow and buried Via Roma under 3–5 metres of mud and rock; three people died. The alert levels on this page are the system Liguria rebuilt after that day — an allerta rossa closes schools and can close the trails.
The stream under the main street
Via Roma runs on top of the culverted Vernazzola torrent. In extreme rain the water that once had a riverbed has nowhere to go but up through the street — which is why the advice during an allerta arancione or rossa is to stay off Via Roma and the harbour front and move to upper floors, never cellars.
Autumn is the season to watch
The dangerous setup is warm, humid air off the Ligurian Sea meeting the first cold air of autumn — storm cells that stall and reload over the same few valleys. September to November is when gialla and arancione days cluster; the terraces and drainage channels above town are built for ordinary rain, not for that.
