If the ferry sails to Þorlákshöfn instead
When storms or sand silt the Landeyjahöfn entrance below the depth the ferry needs, sailings reroute to Þorlákshöfn — a 75 km, 2.5–3 hour crossing instead of 35 minutes, sometimes for weeks. On those days the times change: from Vestmannaeyjar at 07:00 and 16:00, from Þorlákshöfn at 10:45 and 19:45. Which harbour is in use is announced ad hoc, so check herjolfur.is before you drive to the mainland side. The backup when the boat can't sail at all is the small plane to Reykjavík from Vestmannaeyjar Airport — but the scheduled-flight operator has been unstable since 2024, so confirm it's flying before you count on it.
