Haputale sits on a ridge where the monsoon rain and the landslides that follow it are a yearly fact of life. The town's Divisional Secretariat division is a recurring NBRO landslide-warning zone, and estate line-rooms sit on exactly the slopes that fail. In late November 2025, days of relentless rain brought an NBRO Red Alert to the hill country. In the Haputale and Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat areas, 301 people from 111 families were moved to safety, and the A16 Beragala–Hali-Ela road — the main road through town — was blocked by a landslide. It is the clearest recent reminder that here the danger builds over several wet days, not in a single downpour.

The NBRO has issued landslide early warnings for the Badulla district — Haputale among the named divisions — in December 2024, again during the November 2025 cyclone, and in May 2026. Haputale's wettest, highest-risk stretches are the southwest monsoon (roughly May to September) and the second inter-monsoon (October to December), when rain can fall for days at a time.
