In Inuvik, weather is a supply line question as much as a comfort one: the heat runs on propane and gas trucked up one seasonal road, and a blizzard or deep-cold snap can close the Dempster, the airport and the school in one morning. This page shows Environment Canada's official warnings for the Inuvik area and the wind right now.

The wind at Inuvik
A gentle breeze (about 12 km/h, gusts to 24), out of the north.
Strongest gusts forecast over the next 24 hours: about 43 km/h. Wind words follow the Beaufort scale. This is a weather model’s forecast for the hour, not a measurement — exposed ground above town will see more.
When a storm or a cold snap comes
This page shows Environment Canada's warnings. Whether the road south is open is DriveNWT's call, and whether to cut power or heat use is the utilities' — in January 2026, Inuvik Gas asked the whole town to turn down the heat with four or five days of propane on hand. One more thing worth knowing here: the RCMP have warned that 911 from a cellphone does not reliably work in the Inuvik area — the local emergency line is 867-777-1111.

Worth knowing
Cold here is a different animal
Inuvik's record low is -56.7 °C, and stretches in the -40s arrive most winters. At those temperatures exposed skin freezes in minutes, vehicles that stop can strand you, and the town's extreme cold warnings are acted on, not shrugged at. Plug in the block heater, tell someone where you're going, and carry winter survival gear on the highway — the distances between shelter out here are long.
A storm is a resupply event, not just a weather one
Fuel, groceries and mail come up the Dempster Highway. When storms or freeze-up close the road for long, deliveries stop — in January 2026 the gas utility asked residents to turn down the heat and cut energy use with only about four or five days of propane on hand. A big blow on this page is a good prompt to check DriveNWT and top up what you rely on.
