The Peninsula Walkway
A self-guided loop past the seal colony and clifftops, with honest tide and effort notes.
Kaikōura's peninsula is its best free walk — clifftops, a seal colony, and the Seaward Kaikōura Range across the bay. You can do the whole loop or just the easy stretch to the seals.
It's a real coast, not a promenade
Before you set out
- Watch the tide
- The shoreline route and the Whalers Bay side-trip can be cut off at high tide. Check the tide before you start, and keep the clifftop route as your fallback.
- Give seals 20 metres
- Fur seals rest right on the rocks and sometimes the path. Stay at least 20 m back, never get between a seal and the sea, and keep dogs leashed and well clear.
