A landslide on the Third Avenue Bypass killed a City of Ketchikan public-works worker who was clearing storm drains during heavy rain, and damaged homes. Downtown had about 2.6 inches over 36 hours; an estimated 5 to 10 inches fell on the ridge above. A slide can start on the slopes long before the valley rain looks extreme.

Ketchikan airport recorded 6.38 inches of rain, a record for that date, and the Third Avenue Bypass was closed. One of the rainiest places in North America still keeps watch on days like this.
