Four stretches are watched: Hellisheiði, the high Ring Road (Route 1) pass to Reykjavík that closes first in wind and snow; the two Ring Road sections either side of the Ölfusá bridge through town (Selfoss–Hveragerði and Þjórsá–Selfoss); and Þrengsli, the lower alternate pass. When a stretch is easily passable nothing shows for it — that is the good state.
Vegagerðin is the live source — check it before you drive
The 1945 Ölfusárbrú is still the only through-crossing in town. It carries around 15,000 vehicles a day, is weight-restricted so only one heavy vehicle crosses at a time, and at summer peaks — when Golden Circle and south-coast traffic funnels straight through — drivers have reported waits of up to 45 minutes. A common tip at those peaks is to skip central Selfoss and route south-coast trips east via Þrengsli and the Óseyrarbrú bridge instead.
The Reykjavík commute climbs over Hellisheiði on Route 1. It is high, exposed and the first stretch to be marked slippery, snow-covered or closed when a winter storm comes through — often while Selfoss itself stays clear. Þrengsli, the lower pass to the south, is the usual detour when Hellisheiði is shut.
A new Ölfusárbrú — a 330-metre bridge plus about 3.7 km of new Ring Road and grade-separated junctions — is under construction east of town, to move through-traffic out of the residential core. Opening is expected around autumn 2028. Until then, the old bridge stays the bottleneck this page helps you plan around.
