Since 2023 every home in Árborg sorts into four bins, plus neighbourhood containers for glass, metal and textiles. Type what you're throwing out and this tells you which bin it belongs in. New in town? The bin lids carry the same colours as below.

Kitchen food scraps. Use only compostable (jarðgeranlegir) bags — this is turned into compost.
Clean, empty plastic packaging only. Rinse off food, and squash it flat to save room.
Clean paper, cardboard and drink cartons (fernur). Fold boxes flat.
Only what can't be recycled or composted: dirty packaging, nappies, chewing gum.
Glass, metal and textiles go to the grenndargámar drop-points around town; batteries, electronics, paint and bulky items go to the Gámasvæði recycling centre at Víkurheiði 4.

Bottles and cans marked with the deposit (skilagjald) go to Endurvinnslan to get the deposit back — not in any home bin.
The last word
The four-bin system follows Iceland's 2023 national sorting rules; Árborg's own item tables (Íslenska gámafélagið) are the last word if something here is unclear.
