Every October, Shirakawa-gō holds its roughly 1,300-year-old harvest festival: doburoku — a thick, unfiltered sake brewed inside the shrine grounds each winter — is offered to the mountain gods, then shared with everyone in the shrine precincts. The festival moves across the village's three Hachiman shrines over six days, with morning rites, a procession through the gasshō houses, lion dances and folk performance. It is a living village festival, a prayer for the harvest and the village's peace — not a show put on for visitors.

The doburoku is brewed each January inside the shrine grounds under a special licence, by methods handed down in the village, then matured until the October festival. It is thick, milky and unfiltered — sake as it was before sake was clear.

The doburoku is shared only inside the shrine precincts: buy the year's commemorative cup at the entrance (a small offering that supports the festival), hold it out, and it will be refilled generously. It does not leave the grounds — and anyone driving out of the valley that day drinks none at all.

The festival petitions the mountain gods for a good harvest, safe households and peace in the valley — a rite the village dates back some 1,300 years. The lion dances, the procession and the shared cup are all part of the offering; visitors are welcome inside it as guests.

Festival days are busy and the village's usual rules hold: cars stay out of the lanes 9:00–16:00, so park at Seseragi-kōen and walk in for Shirakawa Hachiman. Hatoya and Iijima shrines sit along Route 156 north of the hamlet, with signed festival parking on the day. The last buses out still leave in the late afternoon — the evening performances are for overnight guests and locals.
