Sun rises and sets

The big swing

At 60.7° north Whitehorse never gets the true midnight sun or polar night — the sun always rises and always sets — but the change across the year is dramatic. Around June 21 there are close to 19 hours between sunrise and sunset, with a long bright dusk on either side. Around December 21 it's under 6 hours, and the sun stays low. Late January and February — when the cold sits in and the light is still short — is when locals say cabin fever sets in. It's a normal thing to feel and a normal thing to talk about. Getting outside while it's light, time at the Canada Games Centre, and the returning sun all help; if the dark is weighing on you, the Yukon's free wellness supports are there year-round.

Long light, then aurora

The flip side of the dark winters is the payoff at both ends: weeks of soft late-night light around the solstice, and — once the nights draw back in — some of the best northern-lights viewing anywhere. The darker the sky and the further from town lights, the better the aurora.
