Tide predictions for Kaikōura, from Land Information New Zealand. The Peninsula Walkway's shoreline section is only safe around low water — check the times below and give yourself margin before the tide turns. Whale-watch and dolphin boats generally run calmest on a morning tide, so the day's first low or high is worth a look when you're planning a trip. These are predictions, not measurements: strong wind, low pressure or swell can lift or drop the real water level, so treat the numbers as a guide.
The Peninsula Walkway is tide-gated
The lower shoreline route around the peninsula floods near high water and can cut you off. Walk it on a falling or low tide, watch the turn, and take the clifftop track if in doubt.

Heights are above chart datum (the lowest astronomical tide) — roughly the lowest the tide ever falls — not above the wharf deck or the beach. Times are local (GMT+12). The prediction point is Kaikōura township — the Peninsula and South Bay wharf. Times shift a little along the coast.
Predictions, not measurements
These are astronomical tide predictions. Wind, air pressure and storm surge can push the real water level well above or below them — in bad weather, check the MetService forecast and warnings at metservice.com before trusting a number here. In an emergency on or near the water, call 111. On the water, call Coastguard NZ on marine VHF channel 16, or *500 from a mobile.
