After heavy rain
Surfers Against Sewage advise staying out of the water for about 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain — when overflows are most likely to have spilled and the rivers and beaches carry run-off — whatever this page shows.
A quiet overflow is not an all-clear. This is one source of pollution, not the whole picture, and it is not the Environment Agency’s in-season water samples. The classification below rates past years, not today’s water.
